KFK ("Kunstifondi Kunstitoodete Kombinaat" or "Art Foundation's Art Products Plant") was established right after Soviet occupation started in Estonia in 1940s. KFK was the name of the organisation from 1940 until 1975 and it changed to ARS in 1975. The cooperative's artists primarily worked with porcelain from other factories, such as those in Riga, Latvia, after World War II, but it also had the facilities for producing ceramics.
During the 1960s-1970s, time when this vase was made, the Soviet-controlled art production workshop KFK operated under a tense mix of political ideology and artistic innovation. While the state's official doctrine of socialist realism was mandated, a period of liberalisation in the late 1950s—known as the "Thaw"—created space for more nuanced artistic expression. Many Estonian ceramic artists used the applied arts to subtly subvert and enrich the Soviet visual landscape by focusing on form, texture, and technical mastery, rather than overt political messages.
